Total donations as of 2021: 3.1 million TWD
In 2001, I became connected with Yuan Ze University. Living in Hsinchu, I initially planned to apply to nearby prestigious universities like National Tsing Hua University and National Chiao Tung University. However, with the rise of the Hsinchu Science Park, the EMBA programs at those universities focused on park development and semiconductor factory management rather than corporate governance, which was my area of interest. Only the EMBA program at Yuan Ze University aligned with my direction for further study, so I chose Yuan Ze University to lead the company better.
A Promise Made in Jest
Professor Liao Shu-Ling greatly benefited me during my EMBA studies. The courses and experiences I gained from her have helped my career. Our relationship was both that of teacher and friend. During one conversation, I joked, “If you ever become the dean, I’ll donate!” Although she didn’t become the dean, I donated 1 million TWD to the College of Management as a scholarship when she became the associate dean. What started as a casual remark turned into a promise fulfilled.
The biggest concern with donations is not knowing where the money goes or if it genuinely helps those in need. The College of Management has handled this very well. The scholarship was established to support students with financial difficulties, allowing them to focus on their studies and complete their education. The college provided me with the list and backgrounds of the students under review, which has made me realize that far more students need help than I had imagined. I feel sad whenever I read their stories, wondering if my support might be a drop in the ocean. I continue to donate—because there are always people in need, even if we don’t see them.
Contribute as Much as You Can, Whether Through Money or Effort
The Alumni Services Center once asked me if I expected any returns from the students I helped or if I would like to hold a gathering to meet them.
The students I initially helped have only been in the workforce for five or six years. Many are building families, and some may have just had children. It is a time when they are working hard and need money. Besides caring for their own families, they may also need to support their original families, which is challenging. I hope they can care for themselves and their families and live well. Through my modest contributions, I hope to help students focus on their studies, graduate successfully, and find stable jobs, ultimately changing their lives. That’s what I want to see. “I’m not doing this to gain anything but because I feel it’s what I should do.”
